SERVE Program

Beware: this can seriously alter the direction of your life.

'Let me reflect on that, and I’ll let you know.'  Anyone in sales knows that usually means “no”.  However, when it comes to personal growth it usually means “there is a lesson in there somewhere, and I need to try and find it”.

“There is a lesson in there somewhere.”

One of the most memorable lessons that caused a significant change in the direction of my life was during such a moment of reflection, and it came out of the blue when I wasn't expecting it.  It came when I attended a course designed to discover the purpose for your life, that "Sweetspot" where everything becomes worthwhile and exciting, and boy did it had a significant effect on the direction of my life.

“Follow effective action with quiet reflection.  From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.”
~ Peter Drucker

Way back in Roman times, in an account written on the Civil War (Commentarii de Bello Civili), Julius Caesar is credited with saying that ‘Experience is the teacher of all things’; however Water Scott (1854-1900) disagrees with the proverb, saying that 'experience is the name every one gives to their mistakes.’  I suspect that there is wisdom in both sayings, and perhaps the best summary is summed up by John C Maxwell as: “Experience isn’t the best teacher; evaluated experience is.

That's why two of these four circles are about looking back.  Steve Jobs once said, "you can only join the dots looking backwards".  Looking at how you responded to life's circumstances and reflecting on what activities made you feel the most valued and valuable, focus on "looking backwards" and discovering those answers from the lessons of life.

You probably know your superpower because that's what you do well and because you love doing it.  Understanding your Superpower is the first step in the SERVE Program. Of course, your best, most effective way to SERVE will be sufficiently valuable to someone else that there will be a way to find revenue, whether that’s from an employer, from paying clients, from gifts and donations, or from some other source of revenue.
