Patrick Lencioni - The 6 Types of Working Genius

About Working Genius – why is it so effective?

What it does

Working Genius identifies the six fundamental activities that are required for any type of work:

  • Wonder: identifying the need for improvement or change

  • Invention: confirming the importance of that need, and generating an idea or solution

  • Discernment: assessing the merit and workability of the idea or solution

  • Galvanising: generating enthusiasm and action around the idea or solution

  • Enablement: initiating support and assisting in the implementation of the idea or solution

  • Tenacity: ensuring the idea or solution gets completed and that results are achieved

How it applies to your team

Typically, each team member is a ‘genius’ in two of these activities. They’re also ‘competent’ in two others, and ‘frustrated’ in another two. These are their:

  • Working Geniuses: activities they are naturally good at that energise them

  • Working Competencies: activities they can perform competently but which don’t energise them

  • Working Frustrations: activities that don’t come naturally that drain them

How it improves results

By discovering each other’s geniuses, competencies and frustrations, you and your team can:

  • Leverage one another’s strengths: performing more of the work that energises you and propels your team forward

  • Manage around one another’s weaknesses better: performing less of the work that drains you and holds your team back

As a result, you’re more productive and collaborative as a team.

But you may still be wondering,
‘Can my team really change?’

I believe it can – if you understand why it’s not working as well as it could be. Let’s take a closer look at the problem your Working Genius Workshop addresses:

Every day your team members carry unnecessary guilt and judgement about their frustrations at work – guilt about themselves and judgement about others.

All this frustration robs you and your team of energy and joy. It causes misunderstandings and can lead to quiet quitting, burnout and even depression. As a result, productivity suffers.

This is where The 6 Types of Working Genius can help because it reveals six activities or geniuses required to complete every task – and which of those geniuses you have within your team.

Typically, everyone is a genius in two of these activities, meaning they’re naturally gifted and energised by fulfilling two aspects of the task. They’ll also be competent at two other activities, although these will demand more of their energy and take greater effort. And another two of the activities will frustrate them, leading to a sense of guilt and failure at their apparent lack of productivity in these areas.

When team members understand each other's geniuses, competencies and frustrations, it helps to alleviate guilt and judgement. And it makes room for better cohesion and productivity.

As part of this workshop, you receive a team map which allows you to plan tasks and lean into each other’s strengths. This means you can collaborate more effectively as you see tasks through from start to finish. You can also identify gaps in your team, informing your decisions about staffing. Crucially, your team members are happier, more fulfilled, and more productive. The adjustments you make lead to better dialogue and understanding while each member benefits from a greater focus on work that gives them joy and energy.
